Cleghorn Stevenson in London, in 1810. Her mother died when she was still a baby and she was brought up by her mother’s sister, aunt Lumb in Knutsford, a small country village which later became the setting  for her novel Cranford. Unitarians believed in education for girls as well as for boys; therefore, at the age of twelve, Elizabeth was sent to the Byerley sisters’ scho ol where she received education of high quality, broad in range (Latin, French and Italian were included in the curriculum) and  liberal in outlook. In 1832 she married William Gaskell, an Unitarian minister and Professor of English history and literature. They lived in Manchester where Mrs Gaskell witnessed the terrible living conditions of the factory workers in the city slums, and so observed the rise of a new - segue nel file da scaricare
