Abstract - scaricare il file per l'appunto completo Walt Whitman was born in New York into a working-class family. He had little
formal education and, at the age of eleven, he started to work as an office boy and then as a printer’s apprentice for a local newspaper. Journalism was to become his career as well as a way to support radical democratic causes. When he was about thirty years old, he travelled discovering the vastness of his country and the variety of  its inhabitants. During this period, he read widely including, among the others, the Bible, Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, Carlyle, Goethe, Hegel, Emerson, Oriental religion and philosophy. In 1855 he published the first edition of Leaves of Grass, containing twelve poems about his development as a poet and his experience of the American land.
